FSSAI Licence Renewal Online in 2026: Do You Still Need to Renew? A Step-by-Step Guide

FSSAI licence renewal online in 2026 and food safety compliance documents

Most guides on food licence renewal online still tell you to apply 30 or 120 days before expiry and pay ₹100 a day if you are late. In 2026, that advice is out of date for a large share of food businesses. This guide shows who still needs FSSAI registration renewal, who does not, and what every licence holder must still do. It comes from Uniqfiling, a Gurgaon consultancy that handles Food License Registration in Gurgaon along with other business registrations and compliance work.

Quick Answer: Do You Need to Renew FSSAI Licence?

Your situation

See the expired-licence section below. Rules for this case are not fully spelled out in public FSSAI documents.

If it is issued on or after 1 April 2026, it comes with perpetual validity.

FoSCoS migrates you automatically. No fee, same number.

What Changed in the FSSAI Licence Rules in 2026?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) works under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It licenses food businesses under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations. In March 2026 it amended those regulations. Two changes matter for renewal.

Perpetual Validity Replaced the Renewal Cycle

The amended Regulation 2.1.7 says a licence or registration certificate stays valid unless it is suspended, cancelled or surrendered. FSSAI’s FAQs state that a Food Business Operator does not need to renew. Hygiene and safety duties continue as before.

New Turnover Limits Decide Your Category

An FSSAI order of 13 March 2026 reset the limits, effective 1 April 2026:

Category

Annual turnover

Registration

Up to ₹1.5 crore

State licence

Above ₹1.5 crore, up to ₹50 crore

Central licence

Above ₹50 crore

Turnover is not the only test. Some activities need a State or Central licence regardless of turnover, so confirm your category on the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) before you assume a lower tier.

Existing operators do not pay to move. The FAQs say FoSCoS migrates category changes in the background from your self-declaration. The licence number stays the same. No modification fee applies, and a fee you already paid for a State licence is adjusted against the registration fee.

How to Renew FSSAI License Online (If FoSCoS Still Shows Renewal)

Some holders of older licences may still see a renewal service. The steps below are the usual FSSAI renewal application process. Menu names can change, so treat the portal as the final word.

  1. Complete your FoSCoS portal login. Use the credentials linked to your licence at foscos.fssai.gov.in. This is the FSSAI login renewal step, and it only works with the account that holds the licence.
  2. Check the FSSAI license expiry date and status. Open your licence and review its category, expiry date and any pending notices. This is also your quick FSSAI license validity check.
  3. Fix wrong details first. Changes to address, activity or constitution go through a modification, which still follows the existing procedure.
  4. Select the renewal service. If none appears, stop. That usually means your licence already sits under the perpetual-validity rules.
  5. Review the form and keep your documents ready. The portal shows what your category needs. Typical items include your current certificate, business address proof and identity details.
  6. Pay the fee shown on screen. Compare it with the indicative amounts below before you pay.
  7. Save the acknowledgment and track the application. You can follow the FSSAI license renewal status from your FoSCoS dashboard until the certificate is issued.

FSSAI Renewal Fees: Indicative Amounts

Category

Indicative annual fee

Basic registration

₹100

State licence

₹2,000 to ₹5,000, depending on the kind of business

Central licence

₹7,500 for many categories

These figures come from the FoSCoS Kind of Business matrix as reported by compliance publishers. Your exact charge depends on your category, so confirm it on the portal. Under the new rules you can prepay the fee for any number of years at once, at any time of the year.

What If Your Licence Has Already Expired?

This is where many pages go wrong, so here is what is confirmed and what is not.

Under the old system, late renewal carried ₹100 a day, and several guides add a 180-day cutoff. The 2026 amendment replaced Regulation 2.1.7 entirely. The FSSAI FAQs do not mention a late renewal fee, a 180-day window or any rule for licences that lapsed before 1 April 2026. Some commentators say no transitional relief was announced. Others suggest restoration through FoSCoS may be possible. None of them cites an official order.

So we cannot tell you the old penalty still applies, and we cannot tell you it does not. Do this instead:

  • Log in to FoSCoS and check which option it offers for your licence number.
  • Read the amount the portal calculates before you pay anything.
  • If you see no option, or the amount looks wrong, ask your State Food Safety Department or a compliance professional before filing a fresh application.

Operating on an expired or suspended licence is a compliance risk, so do not wait for a perfect answer.

The Real Deadline Now: Annual Fee and Returns

Perpetual validity removes the renewal application. It does not remove payment. Under Regulation 2.1.7(2), a licence is deemed suspended if the operator does not pay the annual fee, or does not file the return by the due date where one applies. During suspension, the business must not carry on any food business activity. Paying the due fee, or filing the return with the penalty, revokes the suspension.

Practical points:

  • Annual fee: FSSAI has not published one national due date in the documents we reviewed. Some publishers advise paying on your licence anniversary. Check your FoSCoS payment notice.
  • Annual return (Form D-1): Secondary sources say manufacturers, importers, repackers and relabellers file it by 31 May for the previous financial year. Retailers, caterers and restaurants are commonly described as exempt. Confirm this against your kind of business on FoSCoS.
  • Late return charges: Some sources cite ₹100 a day. We could not verify this in an official document, so confirm it before you plan around it.
  • FSCR: Some publishers use “FSCR” for the return. The amended regulation text we reviewed says “return”, so follow the form name FoSCoS shows you.

Put the date on your calendar. The old renewal date used to remind you once a year. Now nobody does.

Common FSSAI Compliance Mistakes Food Businesses Should Avoid

  • Assuming every old licence is now perpetual. Check FoSCoS, not hearsay.
  • Paying for renewal without asking what is filed. If your licence is perpetual, there may be nothing to renew.
  • Treating ₹1.5 crore as an exemption. It sets your category. Every food business still needs a licence or registration.
  • Ignoring a suspension. It can start automatically, so monitor your account.
  • Forgetting modifications. Update the record when your address, activity or business structure changes.
